Gainful Employment (GE) Reporting – Compliance Confirmation

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is distributing email notifications to schools that may be non-compliant with GE Reporting.  The letters have indicated severe consequences such as suspending recertification, approval of new programs or additional locations applications, and initiating an administrative action against the institution. Such administrative action may include fines, limitations, suspension or termination of eligibility to participate in the Title IV, HEA programs.

Institutions must report student details or the acceptable reason why reporting is not required for every program included on the NSLDS GE Program Tracker List for each award year.  It is important that all students who received Title IV aid for a program have been reported and that the information is complete and accurate.  If an acceptable reason for not reporting student data has been indicated, then you must be able to document why reporting was not required.

To confirm if your institution is in compliance, you can review the NSLDS GE Program Tracker List for each award year on the NSLDS website.  One of these conditions must be met:

  • The word ‘Yes’ is in the ‘Source GE’ column for the program. A ‘Yes’ indicates that the institution has reported students for that program for that year;

OR

  • Any value other than ‘A1’ is in the ‘Status Reason’ column for the program for that year. A value other than ‘A1’ means that the institution annotated the tracker to indicate that the program does not need GE reporting for that year.

If neither of the above conditions is met, the institution must update the information by reporting for the program/year or by updating the ‘Status Reason’ in the list.  If any GE program included in the NSLDS GE Program Tracker List for any of the 2008-2009 through 2013-2014 award years appears with a ‘Source GE’ value of ‘No’ and ‘Status Reason’ value of ‘A1’ (Active), the institution will continue to be included on ED’s non-compliant list.

NSLDS Tip

A program that appears with the ‘Source GE’ value of ‘Yes’ for a year only means that at least one student has been reported for that program for that year. You can determine which students were reported for a program/year by going to the NSLDS website and checking the GE List under the Enroll Tab.  You can also go to the Report List and request the GENEX1 report which will include all of the information that was reported. The GENEX1 report will be sent to the TG mailbox of the requestor, typically within 24-28 hours.
